Sadi Mohammed, Renowned Musician, Succumbs to Death
Renowned Rabindra composer Sadi Mohammed has passed away. He breathed his last on Wednesday at 7:30 pm (Inna Lillahi wa Inna Ilaihi Raziun).
According to Sadi Mohammed’s brother, the dancer Shibli Mohammed, he was engrossed in his musical practice with the tanpura on Wednesday. However, as evening descended, he noticed the house’s door firmly shut. Receiving no response, his lifeless body was discovered, hanging, after the door was forced open.
Mohammadpur Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mahfuzul Haque Bhuiyan shared with Prothom Alo that initial investigations suggest the possibility of Sadi Mohammed’s death being a result of suicide. The exact cause will be determined upon the availability of the post-mortem report.
Sadi Mohammed’s body currently rests in the morgue of Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College for autopsy, informed Mohammadpur Police Station Deputy Inspector Md. Jahangir Alam. He added that upon receiving the distressing news, the police found his body suspended on the third floor of his residence on Noorjahan Road, having had to break through the door.
Born on October 4, 1957, Sadi Mohammed hailed from a lineage steeped in sacrifice, with his father, Salimullah, having laid down his life in the liberation war. Notably, Salimullah Road in Mohammadpur, Dhaka bears testament to his father’s legacy.
Last year, on July 8, Sadi Mohammed’s mother, Zebunnesha Salimullah, aged 96, passed away due to old age. This loss plunged Sadi Mohammed into a state of depression, according to a close friend who spoke to Prothom Alo under anonymity. Overwhelmed by the grief of losing his mother, Sadi Mohammed silently bid farewell to this world as darkness enveloped the sky.
Sadi Mohammed obtained his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Rabindra Sangeet from Visva Bharati University, under the tutelage of Shantidev Ghosh and Kanika Banerjee. He marked his composer debut in 2007 with the album ‘Amake Sikpabe Bhorer Shisire’, followed by ‘Shravan Akashe’ in 2009 and ‘Sarthak Janam Amar’ in 2012. He lent his voice to numerous albums of Rabindra Sangeet and also ventured into modern songs.
He served as the director of the cultural organization Ravirag and was honored with a lifetime achievement award by Channel I in 2012. Additionally, he was bestowed with the Rabindra Award from Bangla Academy in 2015, marking his significant contributions to the world of music and culture.
