During Ramadan, when traders typically raise prices on daily essentials, one village stands out for its exceptionality: Niamatpur in Karimganj, Kishoreganj. For the past four years, farmer Ershad Uddin has been offering milk at a fixed rate of Tk 10 per liter throughout the holy month.
Ershad kicks off his discounted milk sales from the first day of fasting every year. His farm, JC Agro Farm, located in Niamatpur village, proudly upholds this tradition.
In the current market, milk prices fluctuate between Tk 80 to Tk 100 per liter. However, Ershad’s noble initiative has garnered admiration and acclaim from the local community.
With 400 dairy and fattening cows on his farm, Ershad’s operation includes approximately 70 milch cows, yielding around 80 to 100 liters of milk daily. He’s committed to selling this milk at Tk 10 per liter exclusively for the needy throughout Ramadan, a practice he’s faithfully maintained for four years.
Ershad estimates he’ll sell around 2000 liters of milk at the discounted rate during Ramadan. With milk being a staple, especially during Sehri, it remains a favored choice for many. As demand surges during this period, prices often skyrocket. Thus, Ershad’s decision to offer affordable milk serves as a relief for many struggling families.
Customers are welcome to visit the farm and purchase milk, with a limit of one liter per person. This gesture aims to ensure that everyone can access this essential commodity at a reasonable price.
Local residents laud Ershad’s initiative, particularly amidst the backdrop of customary price hikes during Ramadan. Despite a general increase of Tk 20 in milk prices this year, Ershad’s consistent efforts to keep prices stable reflect his concern for the common people.
Abdul Haleem, Chairman of Niamatpur Union Parishad (UP), praises Ershad’s selfless dedication to the welfare of the community. Ershad’s steadfast commitment to selling milk at Tk 10 per liter amidst the market fluctuations during Ramadan is truly praiseworthy and serves as a shining example of humanitarianism in the region.
