In a recent statement, Awami League General Secretary and Minister of Road Transport and Bridges, Obaidul Quader, assured the public that the government is committed to taking comprehensive measures to maintain affordable commodity prices during the upcoming month of Ramadan. The announcement, issued to the media on Thursday night, aimed to condemn and protest what Quader described as misleading statements made by leaders of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP).
Quader revealed that a task force meeting had already taken place to address the issue of rising prices of daily necessities. Furthermore, he emphasized that the government is actively expanding the scope of importing various essential items from abroad. The objective is to reassure the public that authorities are determined to implement measures to ensure that commodity prices remain at a reasonable level throughout the holy month of Ramadan.
Responding to statements made by BNP leaders, Quader criticized their claims, stating that one BNP leader shamelessly lied about the lack of increase in the country’s per capita income. Quader presented contrasting data, highlighting that during the BNP-Jamaat regime in 2006, the per capita income was $543, whereas the current per capita income stands at $2,765—an increase of over five times.
Drawing attention to the past, Quader contrasted the challenging conditions faced by the people during the BNP era, where droughts and calamities led to deaths due to lack of food. In contrast, he pointed out the significant achievements under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, emphasizing the considerable increase in overall food production and the nation’s attainment of self-sufficiency in food.
Quader stressed that no one went hungry during Sheikh Hasina’s tenure, and even homeless individuals were provided with housing and food. He accused BNP leaders of distorting facts, spreading misinformation, and creating confusion by engaging in falsehoods regarding both development achievements and commodity prices.
The Awami League General Secretary noted that despite the rejection of BNP by the people, the party continued its inaction and conspiratorial activities. Quader concluded by asserting that, as a political force, BNP is obstructing democracy and hindering the welfare of the people, drawing a parallel between their behavior and sitting like a rock against the democratic will of the people.
