Following stringent guidelines and conditions set forth by the upazila administration, tourist boats are now permitted to operate in Tanguar Haor, situated in Tahirpur, Sunamganj, the country’s second-largest wetland under the Ramsar project. Effective from Wednesday, the decision aims to balance tourism with environmental conservation, prioritizing the preservation of this ecologically vital area.
Tahirpur Upazila Executive Officer (UNO) and Executive Magistrate, Raihan Kabir, announced the government’s guidelines and prerequisites for the operation of registered tourist boats through his official Facebook account on Tuesday night. Only boats with valid registration numbers are granted permission to transport tourists to Tahirpur upazila starting from August 3. It’s emphasized that any unauthorized transportation of tourists by unregistered boats will face severe legal consequences.
The operation of tourist boats is contingent upon adherence to 12 crucial conditions:
1.Non-transferable Registration: Boat registration must remain on board and visible at all times.
2.Timely Renewal: Registrations must be renewed according to the schedule set by the Upazila Administration.
3.Environmental Preservation: Disposal of waste into water bodies or open spaces is strictly prohibited.
4.Proper Waste Disposal: Waste should be deposited in designated bins on board and responsibly moved to allocated areas.
5.Noise Restrictions: Loudspeakers and similar devices are banned, and safety measures such as life jackets are mandatory.
6.Weather Precautions: Boating is prohibited during adverse weather conditions.
7.Capacity Limit: Boats must not exceed their specified passenger capacity.
8.Tourist Facilities: Ensure a clean environment and necessary facilities for tourists.
9.Behavioral Standards: Prohibit any anti-social or immoral activities during boat travel.
10.Respect for Local Customs: Respect local sentiments and norms.
11.Fair Pricing: Charging extra fare for tourist transport is strictly prohibited.
12.Safety Measures: Boat owners are responsible for safeguarding tourists’ belongings and ensuring their safety during the journey.
UNO Raihan Kabir emphasized that non-compliance with these conditions will result in strict legal measures, including the cancellation of boat registration. This firm stance underscores the commitment to uphold environmental integrity and promote responsible tourism in the Tanguar Haor region.
In conclusion, the decision to regulate tourist boat operations in Tanguar Haor reflects a harmonious blend of tourism promotion and environmental preservation. By enforcing these conditions, authorities aim to safeguard the natural beauty and ecological balance of this important wetland, ensuring its sustainability for future generations.
